July 2025 - Mom, when are you going to do the laundry?

The laundry room can easily become the catch all room, right? It can happen in a matter of days or even weeks!

Here are some tips to keep your laundry room tidy and organized:

First of all, look at the space. Do you have room to add come cabinets – upper and lower, countertops and drawers so that your cleaning/laundry supplies can be kept in cupboards and not on display. This makes the room look less cluttered. Do you want to add a rod so that you have a place to hang items that come straight out of the dryer or washer?

When my kids were young, I kept a basket in each child’s closet and then once a week I did their laundry and wash their clothes together and then I usually washed my husband and my laundry together. This made sorting easier. Instead of sorting through 4 people’s laundry, there are only 2 people’s to sort through.

Some organizing experts suggest you have a pre-sorting station. For instance Julie Morgenstern recommends 3 baskets: whites, lights, and darks. When the basket is full, you do that load. This system depends on family members bringing their laundry to the laundry room. http://www.hgtv.com/homekeeping/quick-tips-for-organizing-laundry-rooms/pictures/index.html

Ask yourself, what do you want to store in this room? Do you want to store extra cleaning supplies, batteries, light bulbs, and cleaning rags? Then build your laundry room around these needs.

Another thing to consider is a staging area for the kids. Some laundry rooms are large enough for each person to get their own locker or cubby.

Other families find it helpful to have an area for their pets. Some owners may have an area set-up to feed their pets or even have their litter boxes in the laundry room.

Have fun organizing your laundry room and send me before and after pictures. I will even share them on my website and Facebook with your permission.
