November 2026 - Preparing for the Arrival of a New Baby

How exciting!

But I also remember how scared I was when I was pregnant with my first child. My husband and I didn’t have many friends or family members who had already started their families, and my sister-in-law—who had welcomed her first child before us—lived 11 hours away.

We quickly realized that, for the most part, we were on our own. While it was exciting to prepare for our new baby, it could also feel overwhelming and a little scary at times.

1. Choose and Prepare the Baby’s Room
Select the room where the baby will stay and start decluttering now. Babies may be tiny, but their gear is not! Make space for furniture, clothes, diapers, and all the little extras that seem to multiply overnight.
2. Start Your Baby Registry Around 6 Months
Give yourself time to thoughtfully choose what you need. Baby showers were such a huge help for us — family and friends truly want to support you.
3. Assemble Furniture Early
Put together the crib, dresser, and any other big pieces sooner rather than later. Once the baby arrives, “free time” becomes a distant memory.
4. Keep Your Doctor Appointments
Stay on top of your prenatal care. It’s one of the most important ways to care for both you and your baby.
5. Enjoy Time with Your Partner
This season matters. Go out to dinner. Take walks. Sleep in. Have long conversations.
Once your bundle of joy arrives, your time together will look different — beautiful, but different.
6. Think Ahead About Childcare
If you’ll be returning to work, start researching early. Interview caregivers or visit daycare centers before the baby arrives so you’re not making rushed decisions later.
7. Understand Your Workplace Policies
Look into maternity leave, PTO, short-term disability, and any required paperwork. The more you know ahead of time, the less stress you’ll feel later.
8. Start a Running List of Baby Names
Write down ideas as they come to you. Revisit the list periodically — you may be surprised which names stick.
9. Pack Your Hospital Bag Early
Include:
• Comfortable clothes
• Toiletries and makeup (yes, it’s okay to want to feel put together for pictures!)
• Phone charger and extension cord
• Infant car seat (they won’t let you leave without one)
Having this ready brings peace of mind.
10. Take Care of Yourself
Eat healthy. Move your body. Rest when you can.
And when the baby arrives — do not try to be super-mom.
Let people help.
Accept the meals.
Say yes when someone offers to hold the baby so you can shower or nap.
You don’t have to do it alone.
