April 2026 - Where’s the NyQuil When I Need It?

Organizing Your Medicine Cabinet

There’s nothing worse than rummaging through your medicine cabinet in the middle of the night looking for NyQuil. Instead of searching during an emergency, take a few minutes to organize your cabinet when you’re feeling well.

I recommend keeping a few small baskets or even shoe boxes on hand. These simple containers make it easy to corral items and keep categories contained.

Start by emptying the cabinet completely. Then sort items into categories that make sense for your household. For example:
Daily Use
Vitamins, prescriptions, supplements
Use As Needed
Cough medicine, allergy relief, acetaminophen, ibuprofen
First Aid
Band-Aids, wraps, braces, sprain supports
Ointments & Creams
Antibiotic ointments, anti-itch creams, topical treatments
Eye Care
Drops, contact lens supplies
Hot/Cold Therapy
Heating pads, hot water bottles, gel packs
Extra Toiletries & Hygiene Products
Travel-size items, backups, and personal care essentials

If you care for someone who takes multiple medications, create a master medication list. Include:
• Medication name
• Dosage
• When it was started
• Any special instructions

Be sure to date the document and keep it updated. This can be incredibly helpful at doctor’s appointments or in an emergency.

To safely dispose of expired medications, call your local police station. Many departments offer secure drop boxes for proper disposal.

If you travel frequently, consider keeping your toiletry bag stocked and ready to go. I also recommend assembling a small cosmetic bag with over-the-counter medications for longer trips and cruises — it saves time and prevents last-minute scrambling.
