June 2026 - Ready to Head Outdoors?
Yes—summer is finally here in Michigan! It’s time to get outside and enjoy the sunshine, fresh air, and family time. If you’re planning a camping trip this season, a little preparation goes a long way.
I’ve included my personal camping checklist below—it’s been a lifesaver for our family, year after year.
Start with a Plan
Do a little research and ask around.
Talk to friends who camp often and get their feedback. Ask your family what matters most to them. Would they enjoy a campground with lots of amenities and scheduled activities for the kids? Or are you looking for something quieter and more rustic?
Since we only camped once a year, keeping a checklist was essential. Each year I added items I forgot—like rope and clothespins to hang wet swimsuits!
Keep Meals Simple
Camping meals don’t need to be fancy. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with hamburgers and hot dogs—especially when you can use the same condiments for both.
Many families bring a crockpot so they can enjoy activities while dinner cooks. You might also consider making a meal at home ahead of time. It’s so much easier to cook in your own kitchen where everything is handy. Then at the campsite, you simply thaw and reheat. We’ve done this several times since joining a group that camps in Tawas each summer—and it makes things much easier.
It’s the Little Things
Some of my favorite camping memories are evenings around the campfire—talking, singing, laughing, and playing cards.
One practical tip I love: bring an extra flat sheet to place on the bottom of your tent. It’s much easier to shake out a sheet than to sweep the tent multiple times a day. Where does the sand come from?
Do you have any camping tricks to share?
