June 2022 – Kids really don’t want your stuff!
“Mom, I don’t want any of your stuff!”
Have you heard this from your children, as many parents have heard, either long ago or recently?
They probably are correct! The next generation usually isn’t interested in using or keeping any (or many) of all those things you love and hold so dear. It’s time to face reality.
So, let’s help them along in that process. We can do this by simplifying our household, with an eye to the distant future.
DO YOU know of any charities that are close to you geographically? You can reach out to local churches or ministries. Habitat for Humanity is a great source to donate houseware and furniture. There is also Vietnam Veterans and St. Vincent de Paul groups, plus local groups.
Ask the children what individual items they would like from you. Prepare a document explaining who gets what items. The same goes for jewelry and possible historic valuable items. Try to give the jewelry to your loved ones while you are still living. That way there will be fewer arguments afterwards.
ARE THERE any grandkids leaving for college or starting a new home who can use some of your furniture?
Do you want to have an estate sale? If you get rid of unneeded stuff now, you’ll know where it goes. Ask your friends and colleagues for any referral sales person help.
Do you need anything to be appraised? You can start with the American Society of Appraisers. One of our NAPO business partners, Darlene Hines with Nostalgia Antique Appraisal Service, has helped many people and organizers find the treasures and give everyone a realistic picture of what is valuable NOW.
GO THROUGH your paperwork and shred the old unneeded stuff, to help you start simplifying your finances and investments. This will help you now as well as aiding your kids later.
As well, let your kids know if you have any storage units that have to be decluttered. And if you need some guidance there, I’m only a phone call away!
