July 2022 — What Do I Do If I Lose My Wallet Or Purse?

Have you ever lost or misplaced your wallet or purse?

I certainly hope not, but should that happen, here are five things you should do:

FILE A POLICE / sheriff report, and get a copy of the report to be sent to the credit agencies.

CANCEL ALL YOUR CREDIT CARDS. Make note of when you called all parties and take good notes. A spiral bound notebook might be a good idea or keep track on your computer. You won’t be responsible for any charges if you cancel your cards right away.

It’s easy to do this. My primary credit card company allows immediate suspension of my card, so no one can else can utilize it. That gives owners a day or so of relief to attempt recovery of your card. You can access your statement online to retrace your steps and see where you may have last used the card.

CONTACT YOUR FINANCIAL INSTITUITION and cancel all ATM and bank cards. And remember, change your pin numbers to prevent someone else from using them!

Remember to look at both your credit card and bank statements to see which are set up for autopay and update them. It’s a good idea to have this on a printed “cheat sheet,” too, which you should file safely at home. That way, you will know what is being paid and out of which account.

Remember to add their bank and credit card company phone numbers to your at-home cheat sheet, making it easy to contact everyone. Or, add them to your phone.

AS WE AGE, you may consider getting a “wallet tile - key finder.” This is a small card to place in your wallet, purse, planner or with keys. I’ve had several clients get these in 2021 and they are easy to set up and very helpful to track items.

CONSIDER SIGNING UP for a credit monitoring system for six to nine months, to make sure no one has opened credit cards in your name. This is why it’s important to not carry your Social Security Card or have the number written down in your wallet.

IF YOU CAN’T find your lost or stolen wallet, you will need to report it to one of the credit report agencies. They will circulate to the other two national agencies.

Finally, ask your cellular phone provider to watch for items being ordered under fraudulent circumstances. Include the phone numbers of all the needed reporting agencies so everything is in one document.

Everyone is entitled to one free credit report each year, by registering at annualcreditreport.com to watch for no improper activity. Plus here are credit reporting company:
