May 2023 — Cleaning Out That Never-Ending Closet

Now is the time to be brave — today is your day to clean your closet!

Many folks consider closet cleaning to be a very difficult job, since it involves so many personal items you use every day. But it doesn't have to be difficult!

Take a deep breath and get your supplies all ready. That way, you can be ready to stay in the room and not get side tracked.

BRING A COUPLE of transfer bags or boxes and label them accordingly — such as "things to donate," "items to go to the dry cleaners," "things that belong elsewhere," and "items ready for the garbage."

Many of you may have heard of clean-up expert Marie Kondo. She has written books, advice columns and even has her own Netflix series. She has some excellent minimizing ideas and concepts, which usually start with emptying all your closets and depositing everything on your bed.

I DON'T AGREE with that system. Past experience has taught me that big piles of your personal clothes can be overwhelming for most of my clients. Instead, let's tackle each closet individually.

First, organize your closet into seasons, so all your fall and winter clothing is together, as are your spring and summer items. Streamlining your closet will reduce time in your busy morning routine.

You can invest money in some key pieces, and then you will be able to get dressed more quickly, since you don't have to spend as much time. Plus, key pieces will help you look more professional.

It's important to build your wardrobe by realizing what you have, and adding what you really need. Remember, just changing your scarf or jewelry can change the look as well!

YOUR CLOSET and dressers should dictate how much of a category you can keep in your organized space. That might mean you have to limit your collection of jeans to maybe only five or less!

I've had a few clients use "ThreadUp," "Poshmark" or the "Real Real" to sell some of their unwanted designer brands. Most clients have been happy with their results.

BEFORE YOU PLACE your items back in the closet, take a good, hard look to be sure each piece of wardrobe is something that you still love, and that it looks great on you.

And before you pack away everything, clean it all, or take it to the dry cleaners. You'll know everything is ready to go, when it's time to go out wearing it.

Are there any items that need a little mending? Perhaps one of your cuffs has started to undo? Are there buttons that need to be secured or replaced? Make the improvement now, so you won't have to do so later.

Be sure to empty all your pockets (and hopefully you’ll find a few forgotten dollar bills!) We all can use a little extra cash, right?

EXPERTS SUGGEST YOU place all items on hangers or in plastic storage containers. And don’t forget to label each of those storage containers. You can name one side “Winter Clothes” and the other side “Summer Clothes” so you can have the appropriate label facing when you put the container away.

Don't store your clothes in cardboard boxes. We don’t want to attract anything to take up residence! Some people toss in a dryer sheet, so things smell fresh and nice when you next unpack it.

Think about where you are storing the clothes. For instance, your garage is traditionally not a good place. A better choice would be a spare closet or basement, as long as that space isn’t damp or musty smelling.
