April 2022 - Organizing your electronic photos and creating a photo book

April is a great time to organize your photos electronically, and maybe even consider creating a photo book.

Many of us have photos scattered throughout our computer — and we’ve been meaning to organize them. But, that’s one of those chores that we never seem to have time to handle.

MOST OF US just need a little direction, so here are a few options to approach this huge project:

1.First of all, how would you like these photos to be organized? I like gathering my photos by year. Then I use subfolders within that year to help break things down. For instance, you may have a folder for Christmas or a wedding that you attended that year which may contain those specific photos.
2.I would suggest starting with your more recent photos and work backwards. That’s a simple way to begin cleaning up your collection.
3.After you have photos organized, now do a backup of your photos. Buy an external memory stick or thumb drive and copy all your pictures to that storage unit. Now, place that backup copy in your fireproof safe or upload your images somewhere online so you’ll always have access to all your photos, wherever you are.
4.Next, delete your duplicate photos. Just keep the best photos to make your collection more interesting, with no “bad” pictures include.

MAKING A PHOTO BOOK

It’s nice to practice making a book as a fun project. Choose one of the multiple sites to create books by searching for “Make a photo book” and you’ll find Shutterfly, Snapfish, Collage, Mixbook, Photobook America and many others. Each will guide you to choose book page size, number of pages and number of photos you wish to use.

This will help you become familiar with the website. In past newsletters, I enjoy using Shutterfly and once you get familiar with the website you choose, it makes sense to stick with that company so you don’t have to spend so much time learning new styles and techniques. Plus, once you open an account, your past projects will be gathered in one place. These can even be reprinted later, if you need more copies.

THE NICE thing about Shutterfly is that you also have good flexibility to create calendars and ornaments. Those are just a few of possible products — and watch for online specials and discounts. They often have great coupons for returning customers.

Plus, if you create a book and then find more photos afterwards, you can add them to any reprints of the photo book.

I know my projects have stayed in my online account for several years, but if Shutterfly goes through a large update, you may not have access to some of them anymore. Just so you know!

SOME GREAT ideas for making photo books can be a trip or wedding or your baby’s first year, but you may also want to document your parents’ 40th or 50th or 60th wedding anniversary. This would be the perfect time to add some of their history story for the grandkids in future generations.

If you start a photo book project now, you can easily have it completed as a Christmas or holiday gift. I try to create my family photo calendars in September or October because I know life really gets hectic when we hit November!
