Hopefully we all will be spending this holiday season with family and friends, unlike our forgettable 2020 holiday season. I want to help you get ready for serving that company the best possible way. Here are some helpful tips to do everything right: Plan ahead as much as possible because we know the holiday season is such a busy time of the year. Set aside a few hours each weekend planning and doing little projects around the house, always thinking about how to make visitors more comfortable (and to make your job as easy as possible!) First, start with the room where your guests will stay. Start by getting everything off the floor — and don’t just stash it in the closet! Make wise decisions and don’t procrastinate any longer. After all, time is running shorter each day. Confirmation - Get an idea of the number of guests coming and when. Will they need anything special? That means you may need to rent or borrow a shower seat for seniors. Or, do you need to pick up a playpen or car seat for younger guests? Activities - What will guests want to do while they are visiting? Will you have to book any dining reservations or order concert tickets? Now is the time to think about those things! Schedules - Do your guests have plans with other people? If so, you may want to include them in your own plans. Allergies - Do your guests have any allergies that you have to work around? Do you want to plan a menu ahead of time? Think of easy things like casseroles and maybe having a few frozen things that you can quickly pull out, if times change. You may also want to buy a few extra snacks to have around, especially some fresh fruits and vegetables. Sleeping arrangements - Where is all that company going to sleep? Do you have enough pillows, sheets, comforters, blankets and air mattresses to go around? Don’t forget to inflate items, to make sure they still work and not leak. Toiletries - Do you have nice towels for your guests? You can put together a little basket with some special supplies, such as extra charging cords, toothbrushes/tooth paste, face cream, shampoo and conditioner. A few more topics to think about are: call a house cleaner early (in early November), because they book up fast this month! Give yourself some extra time with grocery shopping, plus you may also have to stock up the bar. You may even have your groceries delivered to save you time. Therefore, budget accordingly. Next, tackle your kitchen. Take a few hours to go through your drawers including that famous junk drawer. Match up Tupperware dishes, plus pots and pans to be ready for more action. Remember to wash the front of the cabinets and de-clutter your countertops and pantry. Spend a little time on tidying your garage and recycling centers. Be sure your brooms and snow shovels are ready for use, if they are needed while your visitors are with you. Launder your throw blankets and pull out some nice smelling candles, especially if you have pets. Fragrant smells are always better than animal odors, which we sometimes don’t even think about. Dust and vacuum the flat surfaces and floors and carpets all over your home. Pay special attention to your front hallway, where company will first be greeted. Tackle the bathrooms just a few days before the guests arrive. Do you have enough paper towels and toilet paper? If you do a lot at the beginning of the month, then the day before they arrive, it’s a simple wipe of the counters, mirrors and toilets. You’ll have energy for your company! Whew — now you should be ready to make the best-possible memories for all your guests. Now, you can enjoy the company… and be thankful because last year was a very different holiday season.
